Complete Guide to Root Canal Treatment

Understanding the Procedure, Process, and What to Expect

Understanding Root Canal Treatment

A root canal is a dental procedure that saves a tooth deeply infected or damaged at its core. Inside your tooth, beneath the hard enamel and dentin, lies soft tissue called pulp. This pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and helps the tooth grow. When decay or injury reaches this pulp, it can become inflamed and infected.

Important Note:

While a root canal might sound intimidating, modern dentistry has made it a comfortable and tooth-saving procedure. It's actually one of the most effective ways of relieving some kinds of tooth pain.

Why You Might Need a Root Canal

Common Symptoms

  • Persistent toothache
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swelling in the gum area
  • Pain when biting or chewing

Benefits of Treatment

  • Saves your natural tooth
  • Relieves pain and discomfort
  • Prevents infection spread
  • Restores normal bite function

The Root Canal Procedure Process

1

Diagnosis and Anesthesia

Your dentist will use X-rays and exams to confirm that a root canal is necessary. Then, they'll numb the tooth and surrounding area with a local anesthetic, ensuring you won't feel pain.

2

Isolating the Tooth

A small rubber sheet called a dental dam is placed around the tooth. This keeps it clean and dry during the procedure.

3

Accessing and Cleaning

A tiny opening is made in the top of your tooth to reach the infected pulp chamber. Using specialized instruments, the dentist removes the infected pulp and carefully cleans and shapes the inside of the root canals.

4

Filling and Restoration

The canals are filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha to prevent re-infection. After healing, you'll return for a permanent filling or crown.
